Google I/O is Google’s yearly developer conference held in San Francisco, where the company announces the latest in its platforms, services and products. Like they do year after year, Sundar Pichai (Senior Vice President, Android, Chrome & Apps at Google) and his team had several big announcements to make this Google I/O as well. Some of the numbers that the company announced at this year’s conference shows how far they have come in taking Android, Chrome and its other products to the next billion people. Here are some of the key announcements which were made in the event which was viewed by over 2 Million users on the web from across 90 countries and 6 different continents.
Android now has 1 Billion users
Android, Google’s popular mobile operating system currently has 1 Billion active users worldwide on 4000 unique devices from more than 400 manufacturers, and over 500 carriers, i.e., 8 out of every 10 phones worldwide is operating on Android.
50 Billion android apps were installed in the past year
Over 50 billion android apps were installed through Google Play over the past year. This is tremendous growth for Google and Android, the thing is, it is even better in areas like India, southeast Asia, and the Middle East as the growth is twice as fast as the rest of the world.
There are now more than 4000 android wear apps to download
If you have an android watch or any other wearable which runs on android, you now have more than 4000 android wear apps to download. Android Wear is Google’s android operating system for smartwatches and other wearables.
Over 17 Million Chromecasts have been shipped since launch
Chromecast, Google’s own thumb-sized media streaming device that plugs into the HDMI port on your TV making it to easy to enjoy online video, music and anything from the web, now has over 17 Million users handling over 1.5 billion streaming requests. There are over 20000 cast-enabled apps in Google Play to choose from.
Android Auto will be on 35 different car brands
Android Auto, Google’s own android operating system for automobile will be on 35 different car brands in the coming months, helping users access search, maps, music and other information through the car’s controls. Popular automobile brands such as Audi, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Honda etc., will start featuring android auto OS in the dashboards of their upcoming car models.
Gmail now has 900 Million active users
Google’s own popular email service on the web, Gmail now has 900 Million active users, up from 425 Million in 2012. Importantly, 75% of these users access their accounts on mobile.
Over the past decade, Google has done exceedingly well to build two of the biggest open source platforms in android & chrome from the bottom up.
